The Lifelong Brain & Cognition Lab is comprised of students and post-docs from a number of disciplines including Cognitive Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience, Human Factors and Medicine all of whom have an interest in studying the relationship between brain and mind in both well controlled tasks in the laboratory (and in the bore of an MRI) as well as in extra-laboratory contexts such as automobile driving, flying, and other real-world domains. About the Theater Study
More and more studies suggest that what physical exercise does for the body, mental exercise does for the brain. Based on their own extensively published research, Drs. Helga and Tony Noice of Elmhust College have developed a unique program that takes place in a fun, socially supportive atmosphere. This is not a "how to memorize" course - you participate in lively discussions and activities in the arts.
You'll be able to see how much you've improved, because you'll take part in a series of simple but efficient cognitive tests and MRI scans before and after the course (and don't worry, all results are strictly confidential). And the best part is that the program is funded by the National Institutes of Health, so it is free! In fact, each participant who attends the sessions and the follow-up tests can make up to $180.
Classes are held on a regular basis at the Beckman Institute here in Urbana. We meet twice per week for 4 weeks - and each session lasts about an hour. The tests are conducted before the classes start and once they finish up - along with 4 months later.
